No. 2 D’Evelyn girls basketball picks up 10th straight win

DENVER — Macy Scheer made the most of her Senior Night on Wednesday.
D’Evelyn’s 6-foot forward was on fire in the first half, pouring in 22 points by halftime in the Class 5A/4A Jeffco League game against Dakota Ridge. Scheer finished with a career-high 29 points as the Jaguars cruised to a 67-30 home victory.
“I think the first line of my senior night speech for Macy was, she is a rare combination of size and skill,” D’Evelyn coach Chris Olson said. “She just loves big moments and lives for those. She just goes and does her thing.”
Scheer was doing whatever she wanted to in the first quarter scoring 15 points as the Jaguars (17-2, 9-0 in 5A/4A Jeffco) jumped out to an early 23-7 lead. The senior kept it going with seven points in the second quarter to help extend the Jaguars’ lead to 39-12 on Dakota Ridge (9-11, 5-5).
“I honestly didn’t realize I had 22 points,” Scheer said about her torrid scoring pace in the first half. “I was just playing with my team and having fun with my seniors. I just wanted to embrace the whole game.”
Scheer admitted she had been struggling with her 3-point shot, but she sank a season-high five 3-pointers in D’Evelyn 10th straight victory.
Fellow senior Peyton Marvel got into the scoring act with 19 points as the Marvel and Scheer combined for 48 points in their final home conference game of their illustrious careers. Senior Ingrid Dalla had six points to help the Jaguars’ cause.
While Marvel and Scheer has been Olson’s centerpieces over the past few seasons, he likes his supporting cast.
“As much as people might think we are two players (Marvel and Scheer) centric, Ingrid (Dalla) can come in and score eight points. Megan (Schonberger) gets to the rim. Colleen (Monahan) can hit a 3-pointer and Rowan (Moden) makes a free throw,” Olson said of some of his contributing role players. “We have a lot of depth. A lot of teams we play only plays six or seven girls. The way we play helps wear teams down.”
D’Evelyn — No. 2 in this week’s 4A girls basketball Colorado Preps coaches and media poll — is one win away from winning back-to-back 5A/4A Jeffco League titles. The Jaguars are on the road for a 6 p.m. tipoff Friday at Green Mountain against the 5A’s No. 7 Rams (15-5, 9-1).
Simply, the winner takes the conference title.
“We knew this year there are some phenomenal players in this league,” Olson said. “Everyone is pretty good. It is pretty fitting that it will come down to one of the last games. Whoever wins it will get bragging rights.”
Green Mountain took care of its own business Wednesday night with a 63-22 road victory at Wheat Ridge to set up the winner-take-all situation Friday night.
“We know (Green Mountain) is going to be good,” Scheer said about Friday’s showdown on the Rams’ home court. “We know they are going to be competitive. They are going to bring it.”
Dakota Ridge is fighting to make the 5A postseason tournament. The Eagles were No. 34 in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index before action Wednesday night. Dakota Ridge must finish in the top-32 to make the state tournament that begins Tuesday, Feb. 20.
The Eagles close out their league season at home against Pomona on Friday night.
