In a tough 4A Jeffco league cross country competition at Clement Park, the D’Evelyn girls held their own and won by just one point over Green Mountain with a score of 52.

All five of their scorers placed in the top 20, led by sophomore Taylor Haerbig at 19:21 and a fifth-place mark. Her sister, Katy, helped give the team a boost by returning from an injury she sustained earlier in the season.

Senior Corin Zapico, who placed 33rd with a time of 21:29, feels that this success is just the beginning for the Jaguar ladies.

“I’m feeling really good, really proud of the team. It’s nice that we finally won leagues. I know that D’Evelyn hasn’t been able to do that in many years, so it’s really good,” she said.

“Most of our varsity team is sophomores. I’m the only senior with five sophomores and one freshman, so I feel like the team’s going to be really strong for years to come, so it’s really exciting.”

The boys, however, didn’t fare as well.

Out of seven teams, they finished last with a 180 score. Despite the logistical outcome, senior Caleb Feagans — who placed 28th at 18:26 — was content with how his team performed.

“For kind of a not great team, we did pretty good,” he said. “We lost a lot of seniors last year, so we’re in a rebuilding season right now. I’m actually the top time right now, and I’m just trying to help these guys get a passion for the sport, start anew and help them achieve their goals.”
